A month ago he was diagnosed with Leukemia, but given an excellent prognosis. This past week, he had surgery and almost over night developed an infection that turned toxic, entered the blood stream and claimed his life before anyone knew what happened.
After I received the phone call, I had to call 4 other people on the "snow tree". Informing them was incredibly challenging. The entire time, all I could think was, why do children die? Why, oh why, do children die..... It made me extremely sad.
Tomorrow we head into work to break the news to the students. We've been told that the principal is writing a letter that we are to read to the students, then handle questions. It will be a very sad day at SES tomorrow and maybe even for the next week. I can't even imagine the questions I will have to answer. I haven't the slightest idea on how to prepare.

Wow, Ann Marie, I can't even imagine. So sorry.
How to prepare? You can't. Compassion, that's all, just show compassion.
You poor thing. I hope you got through the day okay.
Thinking about you girlie...
I got chills reading your post. It's just not fair sometimes, why cancer picks one person over another. And especially a child. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.
That is so sad, Ann Marie. And I cannot imagine how his family is feeling.
It is particularly sad for this to happen to children.
If you would like to email me his name, I will write it on my race shirt for Nashville. My condolences. Art
